This is a topic I was recently asked the other day by a colleague of mine who is involved in business consulting for large corporations. The question made me think about how much has changed in society whether we realize it or not as a result of social media. Think about it, it was only approximately 20 some odd years ago that the average person was beginning to become associated with the internet.
Prior to that, the internet was mostly reserved for academia and various government agencies. Before that it was only reserved for the U. Today, we have not only the internet, but we have social media tied in there as well. A sharing of ideas, opinions, images. The social in social media also implies the tools, places and services that allow people to gather for social interaction.

Jan 02, The system, which has already been launched, works by gathering information about the underwater environment, particularly water temperature and salinity, which the navy can then use to more accurately track target vessels as well as improve navigation and positioning, the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported. The Chinese system is based on a network of platforms — buoys, surface vessels, satellites and underwater gliders — that gather data from the South China Sea, and the Western Pacific and Indian oceans, the paper quoted the report by Oceanology Institute.
That information is then streamed to three intelligence centres — in the Paracel Islands in the South China Sea, the southern province of Guangdong, and a joint facility in South Asia — where it is processed and analysed, it said. In recent years, China has stepped up naval expeditions to the Indian Ocean to fight the pirates in Gulf of Aden. These expeditions included large naval ships accompanied by submarines.
China is silent about the reasons to deploy submarines for anti-piracy operations. China is also seeking to establish logistic bases in the Indian Ocean, much to the chagrin of India. The first such base was opened by China in Djibouti last year and it acquired the Hambantota port of Sri Lanka on 99 years lease for debt swap and currently developing the Gwadar port in Pakistan as part of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.
China is involved in maritime disputes in the South and East China Seas. It claims almost all of the South China Sea and has also laid claims on the Senkaku islands under the control of Japan in the East China Sea, believed to harbour vast natural resources below their seabed.

Sophisticated political parties compete in properly administered elections. A bill of rights enforced through a constitutional court checks executive power. Strong trade unions, vigorous civil society, and a free press each enliven political life. One political party, the African National Congress, predominates.
Through its use of patronage within the bureaucracy, boundaries that should separate party concerns from public interest have become blurred.

Messenger There has been a rapid decline in the costs of solar and wind power, to such an extent that both technologies are now cheaper than nuclear or coal. This development will radically transform global electricity generation networks. How this transformation takes place in South Africa will depend on the role of government, the regulator, the market and to some extent civil society.
At the moment government is pursuing a strategy based on a limited number of high capacity sites. These are connected to the national grid and owned or operated by about independent power producers. South Africa has no option but to derive a higher proportion of electricity demand from renewable sources. This will relieve pressure on the environment as well as stimulate the economy. This is because it entrenches the right of local authorities to control energy retail.
The actors in these networks are protective of their markets and resistant to more decentralised, democratic approaches. This means that a number of possible alternatives are not being explored. For example, one option would be to install solar photovoltaic panels on rooftops in low-income areas. This would enable households to generate energy which they could use for their own benefit as well as the benefit of their communities.
How it can be done The attitude of local authorities to rooftop energy is not a positive one. They tend to overlook its potential as a way of uplifting low income areas through the development of new economic sectors and the use of progressive feed-in tariffs.
It may sound silly, or redundant, but it’s becoming more of a reality. A new startup based in Germany named ResearchGate has already convinced roughly 1. The paper outlines and critiques the two dominant approaches that currently frame the debate about education quality, namely, the human capital and human rights approaches. Drawing principally on the ideas of Nancy Fraser and Amyarta Sen the paper then sets out an alternative approach based on a theory of social justice and of capabilities. The paper develops an overall understanding of how education quality can be understood in relation to the extent to which it fosters key capabilities that individuals, communities and society in general have reason to value.
It then analyses three inter-related dimensions of the quality of education from a social justice perspective. Each dimension is considered in relation to contemporary policy debates and research including the work of EdQual. The first dimension, that of inclusion draws attention to the access of different groups of learners to quality inputs that facilitate the development of their capabilities, the cultural and institutional barriers that impact on the learning of different groups and priorities for overcoming these.

Published March 16, Overview This guide investigates how “the South” has been an ideological and experiential focus for the development of distinctive religious forms and how some of the forms of religion identified with the South—evangelicalism, fundamentalism, pentecostalism—have dispersed throughout the nation. Religion has been a formative experience for those living in the US South. It was not a matter of whether Faulkner or other southerners were necessarily believers themselves, but it was a tangible part of the landscape of places where many people were passionate and open about their faith. By Faulkner’s time, evangelical Protestantism had already long dominated the South as a whole, and this proselytizing religious tradition believed in publicly testifying about the faith by whatever means necessary, making its public presence especially widespread.
Historian John Lee Eighmy coined the phrase ” cultural captivity ” to suggest that the South’s predominant churches reflected a culture of ” southernism ” shaped by economic and racial elites, but at the same time, churches themselves shaped the institutional and personal development of the South and its people. Eighmy, Often theologically and socially conservative, religion in the South also provided the rationale and organization for progressive reform.
Religion advanced the cause of slavery, yet it also inspired slave rebellion. Religion comforts and sustains suffering people, and a South of slavery, Civil War, poverty, racial discrimination, economic exploitation, ill health, and illiteracy surely needed that crucial support. As the South went through the slow and sometimes agonizing process of modernizing, religion provided justification for the wealthy to profit from economic development, but it also gave meaning to those bearing the burdens of economic change without proper recompense.
Throughout such changes, religious organizations remained central institutions of southern life.
